CANGA

This reddish colored rock, which in many places covers the mountain range, is called canga. Its formation took place approximately 65 million years ago, as a consequence of the alteration process of the iron-rich rock known as Itabirite. Canga is very resistant to erosion so it helps to sustain the relief of the mountain range. Its high porosity facilitates the infiltration of rainwater, easing its accumulation in underground reservoirs that supply the cities of the Metropolitan Region of Belo Horizonte.
